Tyres
At Prestons Garages we can supply and fit from a large selection of tyres, ranging in sizes from 10 to 20″. All tyres are expertly fitted by one of our highly experienced mechanics, fitting includes a new valve stem (unless vehicle equiped with TPMS sensors) and a spin balance. Usually if you let us know tyre requirements before 11am, a tyre can be sourced same day. Please see below our guide for tyre condition and identifying what size of tyre you require.

Identifying your tyres size
On the sidewall of your tyre you will see a long number, an example would be 205/55 R16, an example of this is shown above
In addition to tyre size, you will see a letter on the sidewall of the tyre after the size. This letter indicates the speed rating of the tyre, and is required for ordering your replacement tyre.

Tread depth
Tread depth is checked during an MOT test. A good indicator to determine tread depth for yourself (and to check if tyre requires replacement), is to check the wear indicators on the tyre. As shown in the image above these are blocks within the tyres tread pattern. If these can be felt to be below/recessed in the tread pattern then the tread is above 1.6mm. If the wear blocks are level with the rest of the tyres tread or even have been worn down then you should have the tyre replaced as soon as possible.

Tyre Cracking
Tyres are checked for cracking during the MOT test. If cracking is found to be severe enough to show the internal cords then the tyre will fail the test. A tyre visually showing external cracking is a good indicator that it has been fitted for some time and is likely due for replacing. Visible cracking is also an indicator that the tyres compound may be deteriorating and thus the performance/grip of the tyre may be diminished. In addition to checks for cracking during an MOT test, tyres are checked for bulging to the sidewalls, this indicates that the tyres structure has failed and the tyre is no longer safe to use on the road. If unsure of the condition of the tyres fitted to you vehicle then please contact us.
